Huber's!

Teh:

I know! Where have i been right?!?! It has been a month since the last post! Shame on me!

Sorry readers and spam bots, i have been MIA. I'm back!

My boss recently said he went to this place that sells meat. "Raw meat?" I asked. He replied "Yes! You choose the meat you want and they'll cook it for you on the spot." In the end we managed to figure out its Huber's. And so off we went to Huber's for some fresh meat to be cooked on the spot.

You can choose the steak you want (from the display fridge), minimum 200g, add another 45% to it's cost for the addition of fries and salad, that will be the amount you need to pay for your cooked steak. But you know what? Neither of us had steak =( I should have tried it. But i only went into the store to look at the steaks (raw, but looking juicy with all the marbling) after i placed my order for a beef burger. Maybe next time.

Huber's - Beef Burger

I ordered the Beef burger ($15.00 excluding GST) that came with gruyère cheese, bacon and caramelised onions. For the portion and quality, i would say it is value for money. But my little disappointment was the fact that the patty was overcooked. It was abit tough and dry. Maybe it's my fault for not specifying the doneness i wanted it to be.

Oxtail with pan-fried parmesan risotto

My boss had the Oxtail with pan-fried parmesan risotto ($13.80 excluding GST). It's the special for the month of April. The tomato based oxtail stew was nice, tender and big in size (there were 2!) but not the risotto. Initially i thought the risotto was a very bad tasting hashbrown :x Bad hashbrown? Is there even such a thing? Yup you can imagine.

The next time we go back, i want to try the steak!

Do take note they close at 7pm.

Boston Seafood Shack

Teh:

Yesterday we were at Boston Seafood Shack (http://www.bostonseafoodshack.com.sg/#home-page-block). There was a promotion going on from now till end of Dec - 1 for 1 fish and chips from $9.50 onwards! We have never been there before so we decided to give it a try. Office ladies are always looking for good bargains!

There were 4 types of fish to choose from. Cod ($12.50), Red Snapper ($13.50), Barramudi ($13.50) and Catch of the day ($9.50, which obviously was Dory/Sutchi fish). It is a self-service ordering place. You place your order and pay at the counter. They'll give you this thing that lights up when your order is ready (similar to the ones Aston uses at their coffeeshop stalls). For any order of sandwich or fish and chips, top up $2.80 to get a canned drink and a cookie. Please ask the staff for the cookie if they forget about it. That happened to us.

The fish and chips came wrapped up in paper.

And inside, it looks like this. 2 pieces (or more) of battered fish with fries and a wedge of lemon. To be fair, everything came piping HOT, just the way i like it. But my colleague said her fish wasn't hot enough. Maybe they fried her's first? If you are wondering about the portion, i think it is quite similiar to Long John Silver's. Except the batter here is much lighter and crispier. Since it was 1 for 1, 2 sets for $9.50 is not expensive for this quality. But i don't think we will want to pay $9.50 for one of this.

Our search for good food at Star Vista continues....

MacDonald's BLT Burger

Teh:

A couple of days ago, we went to MacDonald's for lunch. Of course i must try the new Chicken BLT burger! To break it down, it is essentially a McChicken with a slice of tomato and some bacon strips. Although there were quite a few strips of bacon, but they were like freeze-dry bacon. Thin, not exactly crispy and not 100% my idea of a bacon. How does the burger taste? No harm sticking to the $2 McChicken.

Recent visits to Mac no longer gives me the same satisfaction as it used to. In contrast, for abit more money, i can get real chicken meat from a burger at Texas Chicken or KFC. Or when we get older, we began to wonder which parts of the animal go into those fast food patty. Eye lids? Cheeks? Nostril? Give me the Zinger any day!

Holland Village Coffee Bean - Omelette

Teh:

We had the chance to drop by the newly renovated Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Holland Village. I must say i quite like the deco inside. Pity i forgot to take a picture of it. It is also a good place to people watch, whether you can seated inside or outside. I'll definitely be coming back!

Along with the new deco, we were presented with a new menu. I'm quite an egg person so i ordered an omelette (Yes again!).

Omelette @ Coffee Bean Holland Village

To be fair, there was only 1 person working in the kitchen. There must be at least 10 orders (5 belonging to our table) outstanding during the time i placed my order and when the dish actually came. This omelette comes with turkey ham, mushroom and tomatoes. The ingredients were diced and the ham cut into small strips. The only way to describe how this omelette is cooked is to ask you to imagine ordering an omelette at a hotel buffet breakfast's egg station. The ingredients are stirred fried briefly, the beaten eggs are added to the pan and everything is mixed together. When the egg is cooked, it gets rolled up. Needlessly to say, the one at Paul's was much better. But it's cheaper at coffee bean. This omelette cost $11.50 nett. It also came with free coffee or tea or ice tea. I think there are at least 3 eggs in this omelette because i felt really full! However, i don't think i'll order it again. My colleague's egg benedict looked alot better. But that's another story for another time.

Brotzeit @ Star Vista

Teh:

Brotzeit - Pork Knuckle
I finally went to Brotzeit to try out their famous Pork Knuckles!!!!! The skin was unbelievably crispy. However every bite into the skin yielded at least half a teaspoon of oil in your mouth! I could only stomach 2 small pieces of skin. Next i tried the meat. Although it was not hard, it could be more tender. Unfortunately, i think the meat was not seasoned at all. There was no taste and it was abit on the dry side. The pork knuckles did come with a sauce on the side but it was nothing to rave about. I suspect they didn't use the lard to make the sauce. The large knuckle came with 2 sides - potato salad and sauerkraut.

The 6 of us shared 3 other set lunch meals (Seafood Salad $15++, Meat Skewers $19++ and Beer Batter Fish and Chips $17++) along with the order of pork knuckle ($36++). The set lunches came with a choice of soup of the day (cream of tomato on the day we visited) or a medley of starters.

Brotzeit - Cream of Tomato

Brotzeit - Medley of Starters

Brotzeit - Medley of Starters

Brotzeit - Seafood Salad
My favourite was the Seafood Salad with it's generous serving of smoked salmon and sundried tomatoes. Plus the salad was much needed to compliment the meaty knuckles.

Brotzeit - Meat Skewers
The Meat Skewers was odd. The meat was slightly tough and overdone. The cocktail sausages were normal. It is not something I will order again.

Brotzeit - Beer Batter Fish
The Beer Batter Fish was disappointing. I'm not sure why the batter was kind of wet and got separated from the fish very easily. Maybe i was disappointed because my own homemade Beer Batter Fish tasted much better. (Sorry for the blur picture!)

On the whole, it was an enjoyable meal. I will be back again to try out the other dishes as well as to have some german beer! I must ask my friends for a "lim jiu" session there.

Paul @ Taka

Teh:

I was with my friend at Paul, the bakery on the 3rd floor of Takashimaya. I got there early enough to avoid queuing too long for a table. There were only 2-3 group of people in front of me and i got seated fairly quickly. It was 12.30pm on a public holiday.

Whenever i walked pass Paul, it was always crowded. After having a meal there, i would say it is decent but certainly not somewhere i will queue to get in. Maybe i didn't eat the right food? I jokingly told my friend Paul is a bakery but we didn't order any bread nor cakes nor tarts.

Paul Bakery @ Takashimaya
I had the Omelette ($14.90) and my friend went for the Salmon Salad ($18.90). The omelette came with turkey ham, sauteed white button mushroom and 2 bits of potato in them. It also came with a side salad full of fancy garden greens. Yes, the expensive type of garden greens. I found the dressing to be too sour. The omelette looked as if it was hastily put together and dished up. Something i would cringe to serve if i were the chef who had with too many orders, hence there was really no time to beautify it and secretly hoped the customer wouldn't think too badly of it. Yup, that probably went through his mind. To be fair, the egg tasted creamy and nice. Pity on the presentation. Apparently they used the same dressing on my friend's Salmon Salad. Although the salmon serving was generous, she found the dressing too sourish for her taste and could not finish the greens that were soaked at the bottom.

Will we be back? Maybe not between 11.30am and 3pm because they do not serve the breads during that timing. Maybe after 3pm on a lazy (or rainy) weekend or weekday afternoon to sip hot tea and have some dessert.

Breakfast at Breko vs Breakfast at Prive

Teh:

What is it with me and breakfast? I think breakfast food are comfort food. No idea why. Maybe i just like eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and hash brown all in one. I was at Prive and Breko for breakfast food recently. Can't help but do a comparison of the two. Let's take a look.

Breko - Brekofast $8.90 ++

It was a Sunday morning and i was at Holland Village's Breko. I was there before 10am. The place was already half full. Upon surveying the menu, we decided to eat here instead of at Hatched because my sister thinks its cheaper at Breko. She's right. I ordered the Brekofast. It came with 1 sunny side up, scrambled eggs, bacon, 2 small sausages, English muffins and half a grilled tomato. I didn't understand why they wanted to serve 2 eggs done in different ways. My guess is it's for people who cannot decide between sunny side up and scrambled eggs. The sausages were normal. They serve the same ones at Coffee Bean. Even the scrambled eggs were oddly familiar to Coffee Bean's. Same supplier?  My favourite part of this breakfast is the muffin arrived piping hot and the bacon was crispy. Not only do you get what you see for $8.90, all breakfast meals come with free refill of hot coffee or tea (only until 12pm). There was variety of tea flavour to choose from. The only thing missing from this breakfast was HASH BROWN! You gotta have hash brown please!

Prive - Ultimate Brekkie $20 ++

For $20++, i was thinking this better be good! Of course you have to deduct $5 for the view at Keppel Bay Marina but still? This breakfast came with eggs, a sausage, bacon, sauteed button mushroom, grilled tomato, a small salad, toast and hash brown. You can choose the type of eggs you want. I was deciding between poached and scrambled. Poached eggs because Prive is popular for their Egg Benedicts. But after that said, poached eggs are fairly easy do. Scrambled eggs require some technique. So i decided on scrambled eggs. It was nicely done with a hint of cream that made it smooth. The rest of things were only ok. One thing i realised was everything that came was lukewarm. Why? It felt like everything was already pre-cooked and assembled in the kitchen (except the eggs of course). The sausage was barely warm, the bacon was not crispy, the mushrooms were understandably cooked before hand, the hash brown has been left somewhere for awhile, the toast was toasted too early. I was disappointed.

Verdict - I prefer Breko's breakfast on the account that the muffin and bacon were exactly how i liked them. I cannot stand lukewarm stuff and for a $20++ (or $15++) Prive breakfast, i felt short changed.

I was tempted to order french fries at Breko to make up for the missing hash brown. Good thing my sister talked me out of it. In the end, i stopped by Wendy's and got myself a real hash brown. A piping hot one at $1.10. Mission accomplished.

Maybe next weekend i'll go Hatched. Do they have hash brown?

Where were you ... in 1975?

I wasn't even born yet in 1975, and I'm pretty sure my parents haven't quite met.  But back in 1975, a little coffeeshop along East Coast Road won 3rd prize in the Cleanliness Competition for Coffee Shop.  That coffee shop still remains today, and it is Chin Mee Chin Coffee Shop.

I was in the East Coast area and decided to drop by for a spot of tea (teh-ci, to be exact), some pastries and a whiff of nostalgia.

Home-made kaya on home-made raisin or plain buns. Add to that, a slab of salted butter. Shiok lah.  Even the tiles on the floor have been there before me!

With so many "traditional" coffee shop chain opening in every neighbourhood malls and shopping belts.  That "old school" feeling gets a bit diluted if you asked me.  But then again, who goes to these coffee chains for nostalgia anyway?

By the way, how did I know that they won 3rd prize back in 1975?

It's framed and hung just behind the cashier counter.  I wonder who's 2nd and 1st?

Xiang Jiang Claypot Chicken Rice @ Jurong West

Teh:

I think Xiang Jiang Claypot Chicken Rice deserves a mention here! I've been to this stall for a few times. The chicken is always tender and well marinated. The salted fish is of good quality. Even the dark soy sauce they use is premium quality. How do you tell if its premium quality? Its very thick and its not salty at all! There are also some charred bits of the rice for people who like them. Most of the time we will order a soup of the day ($2.50) to go along with the rice. Their soups are nice and thick. You get a very homely feel from drinking them. Please call ahead to order so that you can eat once you reach. Check out their other varieties!

Bangkok Trip

Teh:

I recently went for a free and easy trip to Bangkok. Here are some information / experience i gained that i hope will be useful to fellow travelers who will be exploring Bangkok on your own.

Getting to the City from the Suvarnabhumi Airport
After arrival at Bangkok Airport and passing immigration (brace yourself for the long snake queue. We took 30 minutes to clear immigration. Being one of the first to get off the plane helped, alot.), we followed the signboard to the Airport Rail Link. It is located on the basement floor. It is not difficult to spot. We took the city line. It stops at every station. From the Airport to Phaya Thai, it only took 30 minutes and cost 45 baht. There is another express line that  starts at the airport, skips all stations and brings you directly to either Makkasan or Phaya Thai. This ride takes about 15 minutes and costs 90 baht (according to Wikitravel). I did not spot any sign for it. I suspect the train will "state" it is an express line? I'm not sure. There is a ticket machine (or 2) that accepts notes for purchase of train tickets (or tokens in this case). I'm fairly sure the largest denomination it accepts is 100 baht. You can change at the passenger counter for small notes if you only have 1000 or 500 baht notes.

Getting around the City via BTS (our mrt) (http://www.bts.co.th/customer/en/main.aspx)
As our hotel was located right next to the BTS, we were able to travel almost everywhere via the train. Train comes frequently. Like every 2 to 3 minutes. There is a guard located at the platform. He blows the whistle! The whistle warns the passengers that the train is approaching, to signal the driver to close the door and to signal the driver to open the door (after it is closed) because there are more passengers rushing up to get onto the train! The trains are new and air-conditioned. It is a fast and convenient way to travel. The ticket machine looks like the old ones we had in Singapore! Very nostalgic.

Asia Hotel
We picked Asia Hotel to stay at because it is practically linked to the BTS station (Ratchathewi). We took the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai (45 baht) and changed to the BTS to Ratchathewi (15 baht) which was 1 stop away. Please note that you have to buy a separate ticket at the Phaya Thai BTS station. The hotel appeared to be old on the outside and in the lobby. However the room was ok! Big spacious and not too old. There was a LCD TV in the room with cable TV (though reception is not great on every channel). There was no queue at the reception counter when we tried checking in at 3pm local time. Checking in was pretty much a breeze. The receptionist giggled when i asked if there are windows in the room. I suppose she got asked that alot, considering i heard from my sister some rooms do not have windows! The breakfast buffet was average. There is a "security guard" at the lift lobby who will press for the lift when she sees you and greet you with a bright smile whenever you appear. There were 2 minus points - 1) there was NO FREE WIFI, 2) remember i was talking about the guard whistling at the train platform? We can hear it in our room but it wasn't too loud. However, our overall experience at the hotel was good. We made our booking through the hotel website (http://www.asiahotel.co.th/asia_bangkok.htm). Even though it says for 3 nights consecutive stay, you get a 1 day BTS unlimited ride pass, the receptionist said because our's was a discounted price, we were not entitled to the pass. Sad.
Asia Hotel Room
Asia Hotel Toilet

Calypso Cabaret
Part of the reason why we booked Asia Hotel was also because the Calypso Cabaret is right at the hotel. There are mostly good reviews on the internet about Calypso. We booked our tickets through their website (http://www.calypsocabaret.com/). It's 900 baht per pax. If you go to the counter for tickets, its 1,200 baht. The ticket includes a drink (beer, gin, whiskey, hot tea, soft drinks). You may wish to reserve your tickets early because the cabaret is quite popular. It was full house on the night we went. We made the booking 1 week in advance and were given front row seats!

The show itself was not too bad. But it's not fantastic either. Its probably one of those culture shows you have to see (if you haven't seen an "ah-gua" show before, like me). You can take as many pictures or videos as you want during the show! There were 2 performers who made me think "Are they really men?!?!?!" They are too pretty! I didn't manage to see them after the show when the free photo taking session took place. I was sure i could tell if they were men if i were looking at them up close.

** Please note that Calypso Cabaret will be moving away from Asia Hotel in August 2012. Check their website for updates!

MBK Centre
MBK is THE PLACE to go to for good bargains. The shopping center sells all kinds of stuff. Clothes, bags, luggages etc. There were 2 things that drew us to MBK every day. One was the foodcourt situated on the 6th floor (not 5th, take note!) and the departmental store - Tokyu!

I would like to recommend a few dishes for you to try at the foodcourt. You need to purchase coupons to be used to buy food at the foodcourt. Unused coupons can be refunded at a separate counter on the same day. Sorry i didn't take any pictures of the food. I'm seldom the type who take pictures of the food before i eat them! Try the Fried Oyster at this stall in the picture below. It is essentially like our oyster omelette here but the very crispy version! Quite like those in Kuala Lumpur but better! It costs 75 baht. Worth a try. The bed of stir fried bean spouts goes well to take away some of the oily feeling. I saw someone ordering a squid version (not on the menu). Maybe you can try that if oyster isn't your thing.
MBK Foodcourt - Fried Oyster stall

I also tried the stew pork leg with rice at few stalls away from the fried oyster. I saw someone order stew pork leg + the crispy pork + rice. That's what i ordered too! Again, it's not on the menu but the server obliged. It cost 55 baht. The stewed pork leg was incredibly tender. I wonder how long have stewed it for. The crispy pork taste like our shrimp paste chicken here but with less shrimp taste. This dish also comes with some mui choy (preserved veg).

When in Thailand, we have to have dessert! There is sticky rice with mango at the dessert stall but it costs 100 - 120 baht. I thought that was abit expensive. I might as well eat that in Singapore. I'm glad i picked the sticky rice with durian instead. It was only 50 baht. Granted there were alot less durian compared to mango (yes i spied someone's portion), it was still nice nevertheless. The durian was fragrant. Mixed with the sticky rice coated with generous and thick coconut milk, it was pure indulgence.

Last but not least, there is a crepe stall right outside the foodcourt. The crepe was surprisingly good. My sister ate the mango crepe 3 days in a row. I'm sure that counts for something! It cost 60 baht.

We did some shopping at Tokyu too. It is having it's annual sale from 16 June to 25 July 2012. Most items are having great discounts! For every 400 baht purchase you pay in cash, you get 40 baht voucher. If you pay with credit card, you get 20 baht voucher. For same day purchases of more than 2000 baht, you can do VAT refund at the store. It's like our GST refund. We found some great buys there! My sister liken Tokyu to our OG in Singapore.

Chatuchak
Chatuchak is a weekend market that opens at 9am. Think a big pasar malam. Now, think a bigger pasar malam. Finally multiple 10 times that size, you'll get the size of Chatuchak. You'll find all sort of things there. Furnitures, clothings, kitchen plates, animals (we avoided that section) and food. You can get there by alighting at Mo Chit station on the BTS line. Follow the crowd walking to the market. It's less than 5 minutes away. There is a map available at the market that shows the various sections you are in. However it isn't of much help since most of the sections, despite the different colour code, most are named "clothing, food, miscellaneous". If you are looking for a copy of the map, there are available at the security post located at exit 2 and 3. I took a picture of the signage. Again, it doesn't give much information. We didn't buy much there as we weren't the bargaining sort. We only bought some t-shirts  (no doubt at an expensive price!) and some slippers on the outskirts of Chatuchak. The slippers were 49 - 59 baht. They were so cheap, no bargaining needed! Around 11am onwards, the crowd will start to come in and the temperature goes up. We left the place at 12pm.

Chao Phraya Tourist Boat (http://chaophrayaexpressboat.com/en/home/)
We wanted to do some sightseeing in Bangkok. Naturally the Grand Palace is the place to go to! We half wanted to book a tour but there were quite expensive. In the end, we decided to go on our own via the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat. Hop on the boat at the Central Pier. The pier is located right next to Saphan Taksin station on the BTS line. Take note of the boat timing. It comes every 30 minutes. For the tourist boat we took, it cost 150 baht for a day pass with unlimited rides. Although the boat comes with a guide who tells you which pier we are approaching and what are the sights available, his/her English isn't always very clear. When you purchase the ticket for the boat ride, a small booklet with useful information about the nearby tourist attraction at each pier is given to you. The timing of the boat ride at each pier is also printed on the booklet. Keep your ticket for the rides. With the help of the booklet, we managed to go to Sempang Market (Chinatown). We'll come to that later. One note of caution. The boat rides goes from the central pier to pier 13 (doesn't stop at every pier) then it turns around and goes back to the central pier while stopping along the way. You'll have to remember which way the boat is going to make sure you get on the right boat towards the right direction. If your boat is approaching, be sure to stand on the pier platform instead of sitting on the chairs. The boat will not call for you or wait for you!

Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha Temple ( Wat Phra Kaew) and Sempang Market
To go to the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple, alight at the Maharaj Pier. Follow the crowd to of tourist to the Grand Palace.  It is as easy as that. You must be wondering why everyone else seems to know where to go except you. I have no idea why. I followed the crowd too! The general direction is to exit the main gates of the pier and turn right. Walk for less than 5 minutes and you will come to a T-junction where the Grand Palace will be in sight! I'm sure everyone heard stories about touts saying stopping tourists at the entrance saying the Grand Palace is not open etc, but we encountered no such incident. There were alot of tourists there, most with their own group tours. We felt safe there. No strangers approaching me. We quickly found the way to the ticket booth. Entrance to the Palace and Temple cost 400 baht. Take note that you should be properly attired. No slippers (although my sister was wearing her fitflops, there was no issue), no bare shoulders, no shorts, no short skirts for ladies. Although you can rent garments to wear at the entrance, there was a long queue for that. What's the point? There are free guided tours around the temple and palace at 10am, 10.30am, 1.30pm and 2pm. We signed up for the tour at a booth located near the entrance. The tour was given by one of the staff there. He was a funny man named Ken. He made jokes about his lack of girlfriend, money and Harry Potter. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours. It was very hot on the day we went. Be sure to bring water, umbrella and a cap!

Sempang Market is like a wholesale market place with narrow alleys. Buying in bulk means to buy 6 or 12 or more. Things are cheaper in bulk but you have to wonder what you are going to do with 6 umbrellas or 6 bags. To go to Sempang Market, alight at Rajchawong Pier. Once you exit the pier, you will see a main road. Walk along the main road for 5 minutes or so until you see a crowded alley on your right. You can start shopping around. Becareful not to get lost! Watch out for your belongings!

4D Cinema
We were able to catch 2 movies while in Bangkok. We caught them at Siam Paragon (Take the BTS line and alight at Siam station). One of the movies is a 4D one. It cost $16 (400 baht) on a weekday night. I'm not sure what is the price on a weekend. When you buy the ticket, the counter staff are kind of sneaky. They will select the more expensive seats for you to choose. We always tell them we want the cheap seats (yes we are cheapos). Usually the cheaper seats are on the sides or nearer to the screen. Back to the 4D experience, we caught Prometheus. It was a good experience since there are no 4D cinemas in Singapore at the moment, unless you count the one at Universal Studio. The seats move, vibrate and jerk at the right timing. There is wind blowing in your face, lights flashes and there was even some water spray. That's what 4D is all about!

We realised that the movie ticket price at MBK is around 50 Baht cheaper. But MBK doesn't have a 4D cinema and perhaps the seats are of a poorer quality? I don't know. A weekend ticket at Siam Paragon cost 210 baht while it cost 160 baht at MBK. The chairs at Siam Paragon were of good quality and you could lean backward on it.

Madam Tussaud
We also visited Madam Tussaud at Siam Discovery. I book the late savers tickets from the website (http://www.madametussauds.com/Bangkok/en/). Late saver tickets cost 400 baht. It is 50% less than the usual price but you can only visit the place after 5pm. It is ok as it closes at 9pm. 4 hours is more than enough for you to take pictures with every wax figure for more than 3 times! Right off the top of my head, these are the figures i found inside Madam Tussaud - Nicholas Cage, Brad Bitt, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Beyonce, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Biebier, Tata Young, George Clooney, Johnney Depp, Will Smith, Jim Carey, Michelle Yeoh, Tiger Woods, David Beckam, Micheal Jackson, Jacky Chan, Muhammad Ali, Elizabeth Taylor, Queen Elizabeth, Albert Enstein, Beethoven, Pavarotti, Lee Hsien Loong, Ghandi, Dalai Lama, Aung San Suu Kyi, Obama and his wife, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts and some famous thai people i didn't recognise.

This is the end of my very long post. At the end of my visit to Bangkok, i conclude the people in Phuket are friendlier (I went to Phuket in Feb this year). Bangkok is no longer the land of smiles to me. It is Phuket! Maybe the people who sell you alcohol behaves differently from the people who are trying to sell you clothes? I miss Phuket. My heart is still there....

Privé @ Keppel Bay

Teh:

Last week, i was at Privé with my colleagues. I decided to blog about this place not because the food was fantastic, more because i want to tell you why i didn't like it. As a food reviewer/blogger, there's no point in paining only a beautiful picture all the time. The truth must be told.

Privé - Fish and Chips
To be fair, i only had the Fish and Chips. I was disappointment to find the fish to be coated with a thick batter that was not crispy. There was minimum fish within the deceptive batter. But together with the fries and salad, it does make a filling meal at $19 (insert eyes bulging emoticon), only if you are into loads of carbo. A side note, the Fish and Chips came with vinegar. It tasted to me like watered down vinegar. I promptly asked for ketchup instead.

Privé - Eggs Benedict
My colleagues had the Eggs Benedict. They were beaming with joy. But at $16 a set of 2 eggs, 1 muffin (1 cut into 2), ham and bacon, it's a little too expensive for me. Granted the eggs were cooked perfectly, shaped wonderfully and practically a gastronomic wonder (because poached eggs are difficult to master despite the simplicity it eludes), i couldn't bring myself to order it nor have a taste of it when my colleague offered (so as not to deprive her). In the month of April 2012, DBS credit card holders will enjoy 1 for 1 promo on their Eggs Benedict or Eggs Royal (with smoked salmon instead of ham and bacon). 7 days left if you want to enjoy this promotion.

Perhaps people like going there for the view. Unfortunately i didn't take any pictures of the place where the yachts dock. It does make a scenic foreground/background for any romantic lazy afternoon.

Do you like the place?

McDonald's New Crispy Chicken Burger and McBites

Teh:

Lim and i went to try McDonald's New Crispy Chicken Burger and McBites. We decided to write 4 words about it. "Don't waste your time."

While the New Crispy Chicken Burger was a McSpicy without the spiciness, the McBites were the round ball-shaped cousin of the McNuggets.

What took them so long to come up with a McSpicy without the spiciness anyway?

Food Review - Tom Yum Kungfu (Boat Quay)

Teh: Yesterday my friends and i were at Boat Quay having Thai style BBQ cum steamboat. It was our first visit to Tom Yum Kungfu (16 Circular Road) and our first time having Thai style BBQ cum steamboat. You may be wondering what exactly is Thai style BBQ cum steamboat. It is actually a dome shaped apparatus that allows you to put meat/seafood on top to be cooked with the charcoal beneath the dome. The end of the dome is filled with stock for your to cook your food in. Still don't know what i'm talking about? Check out the picture below.

We ordered a $38 platter for the BBQ. It came with an abundance of marinate lean pork, 4 prawns, 5-6 slices fish cake, 5 scallop, 6-8 strips pork belly, green vegetable, bak choy, tung hoon, golden mushroom and 3 beancurd skin. For an additional $1.80, we ordered a pack of Thai Tom Yum instant noodles who's MSG filled soup flavouring did wonders to our existing clear soup. We also ordered a small deluxe platter full of fried items ($9). But i think you can skip the platter. Nothing to rave about. Focus on the BBQ pork instead. The 3 of us ordered an additional pack of instant noodles (because the soup got diluted when they topped up clear stock for us) and a small portion of marinated lean pork ($6). There are many add-ons to choose from. I think the $38 platter is more than enough for 3 average eaters, excluding rice! Just for fun, i ordered a coke that came in a glass bottle with thai words. It is not as sweet as our local coke but i loved it anyway.

The magical thing about the shaped apparatus is juice from the bbq meat will drip down into the soup. It doesn't make the soup oily. Don't worry. Slightly charred bits that formed on the dome after repeated cooking of meat can be scrapped off easily into the soup if you douse it with some hot soup. That's when the magic happens to the soup! It is instantly transformed into a flavourful soup (no doubt with the help of instant noodles flavouring). Think about people browning the meat on the pan, remove the meat, then add stock to the pan to scrapping off the brown parts at the bottom of the pan before returning the meat for stewing. It's the same logic.

We should go back again soon to try out the other ala carte items. Perhaps when the mood to bar-hopping strikes.

Edited: Click here to check out the post for my 2nd visit!

Nueva Cuba

Teh: On Wednesday, i met up with a few friends at Nueva Cuba (Customs House, near Raffles Place) for drinks. I thought it has a nice partial view of the waterfront and wanted to share it here. Another thing worthy of mention is the Mojitos they serve. We had the classic one, the lychee mojito, the watermelon mojito and the Brazilian Mojito (affectionately known as Mojito-gao [thick] by us). They all have an actual stick of sugarcane inside! Good for chewing. There was a server in particular we liked the most. He was friendly and funny. He is someone i would want to employ if i have my own place. Our disappointment was the Beef Fajita we ordered. The portion was too small for the price ($26++) and the beef was too tough. My friends wished for more comfortable chairs too.

Perhaps this is a good place to stopover if you are on a bar-hopping outing. Good view with good drinks but not for staying long.  Check out the pictures! (I continue to wish for a better phone camera!)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Lim and I (Teh) wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day!

We haven't been very active on the blog because Lim is perpetually busy and well, i haven't been cooking anything decent and worthy enough to blog about. And because i think we owe you a post, i'm going to talk about the 2 places i went to recently.

Johor Bahru (Malaysia)
On Lim's birthday (last week), we skipped work together and went to Johor Bahru! It was quite a lazy day. We watched "Underword - Awakening" (and drooled dutifully at Kate Beckinsale) for 7 ringgit @ KSL Shopping Mall! There were only 5 of us in the cinema. We had a good time laughing at some of effects and the incredible things vampires and the Lycans could do. It was enjoyable.

Lunch was a disappointing affair at Causeway Bay Hong Kong Cafe. Don't try the Coca-cola chicken. It tasted like the chicken was fried, left around to be cooled and then mixed with coke (or coke-wannabe). The dry beef hor fun i had was good. The ice lemon tea came in 0.5 litres size! We didn't know. Lim had no trouble finishing it.

The highlight of the day was the massage at the end. For 70 ringgit, we had an hour of foot reflexology and 30 minutes of back massage. The room was comfortable, there was a TV with Singapore channels. I can't remember ever watching "Ellen" (the talk show) in the middle of the afternoon. In between my quiet and discreet face contortions during foot reflexology, I caught whichever bits I could. The back massage which followed the foot reflexology was literally the back breaker. I knew my muscles were stiff but I didn't know it was that bad! But being the sadist I am, i thoroughly enjoyed the whole session. Poor Lim. He said his groans and protest of pain fell upon deaf ears. The guy who gave him the massage probably thought he was enjoying it. lol.

Azzura (Sentosa Beach)

If you like the sun and the beach, Azzura is the place for you! It is a beach club located on Sentosa. You can reach it via the sky train (from Vivo City). Just drop at the beach station and walk towards the beach. Azzura is 5 minutes away.

There are plenty of sun chairs, sun beds, swings and seats. You'll definitely find something you can to laze on while you soak up the sun. If it gets too hot for you, they have 2 pools available. We really felt like we were on a holiday. My friend had the Azzura Dragon Mojito. Its basically Mojito with dragon fruit inside. The drink turned out to be quite potent. No wonder it appeared to be the most frequently ordered drink! For $16.50++, it better not be weak. I had the Mango Frozen Margarita ($16.50++ too) which looked good but was weak on the alcohol side. It was refreshing nevertheless. But next time i'm going for the Mojito! We ate, drank and tanned the whole day. We order Pizza Azzura. It was good! The mixed platter we ordered was rather disappointing. The items on the platter did not justify the price ($34++) due to their small portion and poor quality. There were french fries, wedges, fried sweet potato stick (?), onion rings, calamari and chicken wings (3 parts only!). Pity the prices were not in ringgit.

Side note, plenty of eye candies at Azzura!

Anniversary Brunch @ Ku De Ta (Pictorial Post)

Brought Wifey to Ku De Ta to savour their 3 month old weekend brunch.

Here are the pictures, shot entirely on Canon IXUS 300 HS.

Overall, very good experience! Food was yummy! Some misses though, but mostly hits! Service was very attentive! Even when it got busy later, the wait staff still tried their best to make sure you feel pampered.
